Value Betting vs Bluffing

Value Betting vs Bluffing

Every bet you make in poker serves one of two purposes: to get a worse hand to call (value bet) or to get a better hand to fold (bluff).

Value Betting

A value bet is made when you believe you have the best hand and want to extract chips from worse hands.

  • **Thin value**: Betting with a medium-strength hand that beats some of opponent's calling range
  • **Thick value**: Betting with a very strong hand where you are almost always ahead
  • **Sizing**: Bet larger for thick value (75-100% pot), smaller for thin value (33-50% pot)

  • Bluffing

A bluff is a bet made with a weak hand, hoping to make your opponent fold a better hand.

  • **Semi-bluff**: Bluffing with a drawing hand that can improve (flush draw, straight draw)
  • **Pure bluff**: Bluffing with a hand that has little chance of winning at showdown
  • **Bluff sizing**: Typically 50-100% pot. Larger bluffs are more effective but risk more chips.

  • When to Value Bet vs Bluff

  • **Value bet** when: Your hand beats most of opponent's calling range
  • **Bluff** when: You have blockers to opponent's strong hands, and your hand has no showdown value
  • **GTO balance**: In a balanced strategy, your betting range should contain both value hands and bluffs in a ratio that makes your opponent indifferent to calling

  • Key Concept: Bet Frequency

GTO solvers recommend betting with roughly 60% value and 40% bluffs on the river. This ratio keeps opponents guessing and maximizes your overall EV.
