Hand Categories: Made Hands & Draws

Understanding the difference between made hands and draws is essential for postflop decision-making.

Made Hands

A made hand is one that already has value at showdown without needing to improve.

  • **Monster hands**: Sets, straights, flushes, full houses — play aggressively
  • **Strong hands**: Top pair with good kicker, overpairs — bet for value
  • **Medium hands**: Middle pair, top pair with weak kicker — pot control
  • **Weak hands**: Bottom pair, underpairs — often check-fold

  • Drawing Hands

A draw is a hand that needs to improve to win at showdown.

  • **Flush draw**: 9 outs to complete, strong draw
  • **Open-ended straight draw**: 8 outs, decent draw
  • **Gutshot**: 4 outs, weak draw
  • **Combo draws**: Multiple draws combined, very strong (e.g., flush draw + straight draw)

  • Nut Advantage

Having the nut advantage means your range contains more of the strongest possible hands than your opponent's range. When you have nut advantage:

  • You can bet more aggressively
  • You can use larger sizing
  • Your bluffs are more credible

  • Relative Hand Strength

A hand's value is relative to the board and opponent's range. Top pair is a monster on K-7-2 rainbow but mediocre on K-Q-J with three hearts. Always evaluate your hand in context, not isolation.
