MTT Strategy: Early/Middle/Late Stages

Multi-table tournaments require stage-specific strategy adjustments. What works in early levels can be fatal later.

Early Stage Strategy

  • **Play tight and solid**: Blinds are small relative to stacks, so there is no need to take risks
  • **Focus on value**: Play premium hands aggressively, avoid marginal spots
  • **Build your stack gradually**: Aim to chip up without risking your tournament life
  • **Observe opponents**: Take notes on tendencies for later exploitation

  • Middle Stage Strategy

  • **Open up your range**: As blinds increase, steal more frequently from late position
  • **Apply ICM pressure**: Use stack advantage against shorter stacks
  • **3-bet more aggressively**: Re-raise steals from late position with a polarized range
  • **Defend your big blind**: Pot odds improve as blinds increase, defend wider

  • Late Stage & Bubble Strategy

  • **Tighten near the bubble**: If you have a comfortable stack, avoid marginal all-ins
  • **Exploit tight opponents**: Players trying to min-cash will fold too much
  • **Aggressive short-stack play**: If short, look for profitable shove spots
  • **Final table preparation**: Review opponent stacks and adjust for ICM

  • Key MTT Concepts

  • **Survival value**: In MTTs, surviving has real dollar value beyond chip EV
  • **Bubble factor**: Your chips are worth less than face value due to elimination risk
  • **Stack utility**: Different stack sizes have different strategic advantages
