What is GTO Preflop Strategy?

GTO (Game Theory Optimal) preflop strategy is a mathematically balanced approach to playing your starting hands before the flop. Unlike exploitative strategies that target specific opponent tendencies, GTO gives you a baseline that cannot be exploited by any opponent.

Why Preflop Matters

Preflop decisions set the foundation for every hand. A solid preflop strategy ensures you enter pots with the right hands from the right positions, giving you a significant edge over opponents who play too loose or too tight.

Position-Based Ranges

Your position at the table is the single most important factor in determining your preflop range. UTG requires the tightest range, while the BTN allows for the widest opening range.

UTG Opening Range

From UTG, you should open approximately 12-15% of hands. This includes premium pairs (AA-JJ), strong broadways (AK, AQ), and a few suited connectors for balance.

BTN Opening Range

The button allows for a much wider range of 40-50% of hands. You can open any pair, most suited connectors, suited one-gappers, and weak aces in the right conditions.

Stack Depth Considerations

Stack depth dramatically changes which hands are profitable. At 100bb, implied odds make suited connectors valuable. At 30bb, you should tighten up and focus on high-equity hands that play well in 3-bet pots.

Preguntas frecuentes
