Overbetting & Shove Strategy

Overbetting & Shove Strategy

Overbetting (betting more than the pot) is a powerful weapon in advanced play.

When to Overbet

  • **Range/nut advantage is extreme**: When your range has many more strong hands than opponent's
  • **Polarized spots**: On the river with a polarized range of very strong hands and bluffs
  • **Blocking effects**: When you hold cards that block opponent's strong hands

  • Overbet Sizing

  • **125-150% pot**: Standard overbet sizing
  • **2x pot**: Used when advantage is extreme
  • **All-in**: When SPR is low or on the river with the nuts

  • Shove Strategy

  • **Short stack play**: Shoving is optimal with certain stack depths (15-25bb)
  • **River shoves**: With the nuts or as a bluff when your range is polarized
  • **Tournament play**: ICM considerations may make shoving correct even with medium-strength hands

  • Why Overbets Work

When your range has many more value hands than bluffs, opponents must call with a wider range. This makes every value bet more profitable, even though you occasionally lose a big pot with a bluff.
