Check-Raising: When & How

Check-Raising: When & How

The check-raise is one of the most powerful postflop plays when used correctly.

When to Check-Raise

  • **With strong hands**: To build the pot and extract maximum value
  • **As a semi-bluff**: With draws that have good equity (flush draws, combo draws)
  • **As a pure bluff**: When you have blockers and your opponent c-bets too frequently

  • Sizing

  • **Value check-raises**: 2.5-3x the opponent's bet size
  • **Bluff check-raises**: Similar sizing to value raises to remain balanced
  • **Small check-raises (min-raise to 2x)**: Used on dynamic boards to put pressure on medium-strength hands

  • Board Texture Considerations

  • **Wet boards**: Check-raise more frequently with draws and strong hands
  • **Dry boards**: Check-raise less often, primarily with very strong hands
  • **Dynamic boards**: Check-raising is effective because ranges change significantly on each street

  • Common Mistakes

  • Check-raising too frequently (becomes exploitable)
  • Only check-raising with strong hands (opponents can fold to your check-raises)
  • Not having enough bluffs in your check-raising range
