Short Answer

OOP check-raise value hands must tolerate more money going in, while bluff hands need equity, blockers, or strong turn playability. A range without value gets called down; a range without bluffs becomes transparent.

Value Selection

Sets, two pair, strong top pair, strong combo draws, and some nut draws are common value or semi-value candidates. They do not mind building a larger pot and can keep applying pressure.

Bluff Selection

Good bluffs often contain flush draws, straight draws, backdoor equity, or key blockers. Pure air without a turn plan loses EV quickly when called.

When To Check-Raise Less

If IP's betting range is already strong or the board heavily favors IP's nut range, OOP should raise less. Against large bets, the check-raise range should also tighten.

Decision Steps

1. Confirm enough strong value hands.
2. Add bluffs with equity or blockers.
3. Small bets can be check-raised more often than large bets.
4. Plan turn action after getting called.
