Turn & River Decision Making

Turn & River Decision Making

Later streets are where the biggest decisions — and the most money — are won and lost.

Turn Strategy

The turn is a critical decision point. The pot is larger, and one more card is yet to come.

  • **With strong hands**: Bet for value and protection. Consider sizing up.
  • **With draws**: Semi-bluff aggressively if you have fold equity
  • **With medium hands**: Pot control. Check-call or check-back depending on position.
  • **With weak hands**: Give up or bluff if the situation is right.

  • River Strategy

On the river, all cards are known. There are no more draws.

  • **Value betting**: Bet when your hand beats enough of opponent's calling range
  • **Bluffing**: Bet when you have blockers and no showdown value
  • **Bluff-catching**: Call when opponent's range has enough bluffs to make it profitable

  • Sizing on Later Streets

  • **Polarized sizing**: Use large bets (75-150% pot) with strong hands and bluffs
  • **Linear sizing**: Use medium bets (33-50% pot) with a range of medium-strong hands
  • **Overbetting**: When your range has many more strong hands than opponent's, bet more than the pot
