Postflop Basics: C-betting

Postflop Basics: C-betting

A continuation bet (c-bet) is a bet made by the preflop raiser on the flop. It is one of the most important and profitable plays in poker.

What Is a C-bet?

When you raise preflop and get called, you have the option to bet on the flop. This is a c-bet. You do not need to have a strong hand — the bet represents the strength of your range.

When to C-bet

  • **Favorable board texture**: Boards that connect well with your range (e.g., A-K-7 when you raised from UTG)
  • **Heads-up pots**: C-bet more frequently in single-raised pots
  • **Dry boards**: Bet smaller (25-33% pot) with your entire range
  • **Wet boards**: Bet larger (50-75% pot) with a polarized range

  • Sizing Strategy

  • **Small c-bet (25-33%)**: Works on dry boards. Forces opponents to defend wide or fold too much.
  • **Medium c-bet (50%)**: Standard sizing for most situations.
  • **Large c-bet (75-100%)**: Used on wet boards with strong hands and bluffs.

  • Double Barreling

A double barrel is a bet on the turn after c-betting the flop. This applies maximum pressure on your opponent. Double barrel when:

  • The turn card improves your range
  • Your opponent is likely on a draw that missed
  • You have a strong hand or a good bluffing candidate
