Positional Awareness: The Most Undervalued Skill in Poker
Why Position Matters
In poker, position is everything. Acting last gives you more information than your opponents — you see what they do before you have to act. This information advantage is worth approximately 15-20% of the pot in solver calculations.
Early Position Play
From UTG and MP, you should play tight, straightforward poker. Open a narrow range of strong hands and avoid tricky postflop spots. Your goal is to play big pots with big hands.
Late Position Power
The cutoff and button are where you generate most of your profit. You can open wider ranges, steal blinds, and play more pots in position postflop. A BTN open is approximately 3x more profitable than a UTG open in most games.
Blind Defense
Playing from the blinds is challenging because you will be out of position for the entire hand. However, you already have money invested, so defending with a calculated range is important. Focus on hands that realize equity well, like suited connectors and pairs.
