Advanced 3-Betting Strategy for Cash Games
Linear vs Polarized 3-Betting
There are two main approaches to 3-betting: linear and polarized. A linear 3-bet range includes your strongest hands, while a polarized range includes both premiums and bluffs, skipping the medium-strength hands that are better as calls.
Position Matters
When 3-betting from in-position (BTN vs CO open), you can use a wider polarized range. When 3-betting out of position (SB vs BTN open), you should lean toward a tighter linear range since you will be playing the rest of the hand out of position.
Sizing Strategy
In-position 3-bets should be smaller (2.5-3x) since you have position advantage. Out-of-position 3-bets should be larger (3.5-4x) to compensate for the positional disadvantage and to give your opponent worse odds to call.
Defending Against 3-Bets
When facing a 3-bet, your response depends on position, the 3-bettor's range, and stack depth. In general, 4-bet with your strongest hands and best bluffs, call with medium-strength hands that play well postflop, and fold the rest.
