Range Advantage & Nut Advantage

Range Advantage & Nut Advantage

Understanding who has the stronger range on a given board is fundamental to GTO strategy.

Range Advantage

Range advantage means your overall range connects better with the board than your opponent's range.

Example: You raised UTG and BB called. Flop is A-K-7. Your UTG range contains many Ax and Kx hands, while BB's range is capped. You have a significant range advantage.

Nut Advantage

Nut advantage means your range contains more of the strongest possible hands (the "nuts") on a given board.

Example: On A-A-7, the raiser has all the quads (AA) and better trips (A7s), while the caller has very few.

How to Use These Concepts

  • **With range + nut advantage**: Bet aggressively with large sizing. Your bluffs are credible.
  • **With range advantage but no nut advantage**: Bet frequently but with smaller sizing.
  • **With neither advantage**: Check more often and play defensively.

  • Practical Application

When you have both range and nut advantage, you can play an aggressive strategy with large bets. Your opponent must defend wide because you could have the nuts, making your bluffs more profitable.
