Short Answer
A float is an in-position call on the flop with a marginal or unmade hand, planning to bet when the opponent shows weakness later. Good floats need backdoor equity, blockers, or a clear turn plan.
Good Float Hands
Hands with backdoor flushes, backdoor straights, two overcards, ace-high blockers, or many improving turns are better floats. Calling with no equity is usually delayed loss.
Later Betting
When the opponent checks turn and the card improves your range or reduces villain's nut density, betting is reasonable. If the turn strongly favors villain, give up.
Decision Steps
- Confirm you are in position.
- Choose combos with backdoors or blockers.
- Predefine which turns you will bet.
- Float less against opponents who do not give up.
