Pot Odds & Outs Calculation

Understanding pot odds and outs is fundamental to making mathematically correct decisions at the poker table.

What Are Outs?

Outs are the cards that will improve your hand to a winner. For example, if you have a flush draw with 4 hearts, there are 9 remaining hearts in the deck — you have 9 outs.

Counting Outs

  • **Flush draw**: 9 outs
  • **Open-ended straight draw**: 8 outs
  • **Gutshot straight draw**: 4 outs
  • **Two overcards**: 6 outs
  • **Flush draw + gutshot**: 12 outs

  • The Rule of 2 and 4

A quick way to estimate your probability of hitting:

  • Multiply your outs by **2** for the probability of hitting on the next card
  • Multiply your outs by **4** for the probability of hitting by the river (from the flop)

  • Example: 9 outs × 4 = ~36% chance to hit your flush by the river.

    Pot Odds Calculation

Pot odds compare the amount you must call to the total pot size.

Formula: Pot Odds = Call Amount / (Pot + Call Amount)

Example: Pot is $100, opponent bets $50. You must call $50 into a $150 pot.

    Pot Odds = 50 / 150 = 33.3%

    Making the Decision

Compare your equity (probability of winning) to your pot odds:

  • If your equity > pot odds → Call is profitable
  • If your equity < pot odds → Fold is correct

  • In our example: 36% equity vs 33.3% pot odds → Call is profitable.
