A kicker is the highest unpaired card used to determine the winner when both players have the same hand type. For example, AK beats AQ because the K is the higher kicker. Kickers are crucial in one-pair and two-pair hands.
Example
With A7 on A94 board, your kicker is the 7, which loses to AK but beats A6.
